Enter with an overcurve from the baseline, come down to the baseline and exit forward with the usual undercurve, exactly as you would for a small c turned around. Then, once the whole word is finished, go back and add the crossing stroke from upper right to lower left.
The only lowercase letter finished after the word
x shares this delayed stroke habit with the dot on i and j and the bar on t, but it is the only letter whose actual body is incomplete without it. Children who cross as they go break the flow of the word, and children who forget entirely leave a shape that reads as c. Build the habit of one tidy up pass at the end of every word, adding the x cross, the t bars and the i dots together.
The cross goes over the letter, not the join
The crossing stroke should sit on the body of the x and stop there. If it runs on into the connecting stroke, it cuts through the neighbouring letters and the word becomes hard to read. Keeping the cross short is easier at large sizes, which is why the big letter sheet on this page is genuinely useful for x rather than just a warm up.
What the three sheets contain
The extra large page prints X and x with a solid model followed by three dashed copies on each of three bands, at a size where the cross can be placed accurately. The guided page shows capital and lowercase at 96 point, then rows of seven capitals, seven lowercase and four Xx pairs on three line guides, ending with two ruled lines. The words page traces fox, box and six, which put x in the middle and at the end of a word rather than at the start.
Why is x the only letter finished after the word?
Because its crossing stroke cannot be drawn without lifting the pen, and cursive is built on writing each word in one continuous movement. The pen therefore completes the word, lifts once, and returns to add the x crosses along with the t bars and i dots. Capital X follows the same rule and is one of the least recognisable cursive capitals.
