Double the 3 times table. Every answer in the 6s is exactly twice the matching answer in the 3s, so 3 x 8 = 24 becomes 6 x 8 = 48. Chant the twelve facts until they run clean, then answer them out of order, then mixed in with other tables, then against a clock.
The 6s are the 3s, doubled
Nobody meets this table cold. A child who can say the 3 times table already knows the 6s and has not been told so: 3 x 4 = 12 and 6 x 4 = 24, 3 x 7 = 21 and 6 x 7 = 42, 3 x 9 = 27 and 6 x 9 = 54. Say the three, double it, write it down. It is slower than remembering and it never fails, which is the whole point of having it on the morning a child goes blank in the middle of a test.
Six times an even number gives away its own answer
This one belongs to this table and to no other. Multiply 6 by an even number and the answer ends in that same even number, with half of it in front. 6 x 2 = 12, which ends in two and has a one in front. 6 x 4 = 24: four at the end, two in front. 6 x 6 = 36 and 6 x 8 = 48 do the same. Half the table checks itself in a second, and a child can use it to mark their own page before an adult ever sees it.
The odd factors do not behave like that, and that is exactly where the mistakes live. Reach each one from the even factor beside it: 6 x 7 is 36 and one more 6, 6 x 9 is 60 take away one 6, 6 x 11 is 60 and one more 6.
The last digit runs 6, 2, 8, 4, 0
Read the chart downwards and watch nothing except the last digit: 6, 12, 18, 24, 30, then 36, 42, 48, 54, 60. It runs 6, 2, 8, 4, 0 and then starts over. Every answer in the table is even, so a product ending in an odd digit is wrong before anybody marks it, and that is a check a child can run alone.
6 x 6 = 36 is the middle of the grid
The square is worth learning as a fact of its own, because it sits in the centre of this table and close to the centre of the whole multiplication grid. 36 is a crossroads: 4 x 9 lands on it too, and so does 3 x 12. Learn it and the table has a middle to work out from, up to 42 and 48, back down to 30 and 24, instead of being a list that has to be restarted from the top every time.
An insect has six legs
6 is a number a child can already see, which is not true of every table. An insect has 6 legs, a die has 6 faces, a cell in a honeycomb has 6 sides, and half a dozen eggs is 6 eggs. Two insects is 12 legs, five is 30 and ten is 60. The word problems here count groups that exist rather than groups invented to fill a sum. 6 is also the first perfect number: 1 + 2 + 3 = 6, and 1 x 2 x 3 = 6 as well, which is a good thing to hand to whoever finishes first.
Which sheet comes first
The chart, then the in-order ladder, and nothing else on day one. One of them is for looking at and the other is for filling in, and between them a child meets all twelve facts without being asked anything they have not just read.
Day two is a shuffled sheet, and the drop in speed between the two is the honest measure of what stuck. Stay there until the shuffled page comes back as fast as the ordered one did.
Missing numbers next, where 6 x ? = 54 is division before anyone has called it that. Then the mixed pages, because a sheet of pure 6s lets a child stop reading the first number and answer on autopilot.
Timed tests last. Speed is what practice produces and not the way to produce it, and a stopwatch handed to a child who is still doubling 3s on their fingers only tells them that they are slow.
Marking takes no arithmetic
Every sheet here that asks a question is a two page PDF. Page one is the worksheet and page two repeats it exactly, in the same positions, with the answers printed in green, so a page is marked by holding the two next to each other. Nobody has to work out 6 x 9 to know whether 54 is right.
Three sheets carry no key and need none: the chart, the desk strips and the tracing page all print their answers as part of the design. The flashcards spend page two on the card backs, mirrored column by column, so one double sided print gives a deck with every answer behind its own fact.
