Every worksheet on this page is the 9 times table and nothing else. Start with the chart, where the tens digit climbs while the units digit falls, then take the same twelve facts out of order, backwards as 9 x ? = 90, mixed in with the tables either side, drawn as rows of dots and finally against a clock. The 9 times table in order: 09, 18, 27, on to 108

The reference half of the page, and the half where the pattern is visible. Print the chart first and read only the last digit of each answer: 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, 0. Then read only the first digit: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9. One column counts down while the other counts up, and a child who is shown that has half the table before answering a single question.

Read down a column the 9s almost learn themselves. Asked one at a time, inside a sum, with nothing printed above them, they do not. Backwards: 9 x ? = 90 and dividing by 9

The same twelve facts asked from the end division asks from. One shortcut belongs here and nowhere else on this site: add the digits of a number, add them again if you have to, and if you land on 9 then dividing by 9 comes out exactly. It never tells you the answer, only that there is one. The group runs the missing factor, the exact divisions, fact family triangles and two machines.

The 9s hidden among the other tables

On a page where every question is a 9, the first number stops being read at all. Here the 9s are buried: beside the easy tables, beside the 3s they are built out of, beside the 6s and 7s, and last of all beside the 8s and the 10s that sit either side of them. Those two are the dangerous ones, because their answers are only one group away and a slipped row still looks plausible.

Half the page is the 9 times table and the rest is the 2s, 5s and 10s. A useful pairing, because 9 x 6 is 10 x 6 with one six taken off and the 10s are right there.

For the child who has memorised the answers without knowing what they mean, and for the one who has memorised none of them. Dot arrays 9 rows deep, which are three by three squares stacked up, repeated addition written out in full, counting on in 9s, hops of 9 drawn as an arc that goes ten forward and one back, and word problems counting groups that really do come in nines, the squares in a sudoku box among them.

Against the clock, once the tricks are no longer needed

Timed grids from twenty facts in one minute up to ninety-six in eight, some multiplying, some dividing, some alternating between the two. The finger trick and the ten-take-one trick are both honest ways in, and both are far too slow for these pages, which is the whole reason they sit at the bottom. Run them only once the shuffled sheets come back clean, and write the time on every one.
