Download PDFWhat are Dolch sight words?
Dolch sight words are the 220 words that make up roughly half of everything a child reads, put together by Edward Dolch in 1936. They are learned by sight rather than sounded out, because most of them break the rules: said, was, come and one cannot be blended letter by letter and still come out right.
That is the whole reason this list exists separately from phonics. A child who has learned to blend c-a-t will try the same trick on said, get s-a-i-d, and stall. Sight words remove that stall by making the shape of the word familiar before the child ever meets it in a sentence, so reading keeps its rhythm.
The list is graded into five levels, and the order matters. Pre-primer words appear most often, so they repay practice fastest; third grade words are the rarest of the 220 and are worth nothing until the earlier levels are automatic. Work down the levels, not across them.
How many sight words should a child learn at once?
Five at a time is the working number for most children, held for about a week. Fewer feels slow and the child loses interest; more and the words blur into each other, especially near-twins like was and saw or there and three. A word is learned when it is read instantly, not worked out.
Each sheet here drills one small set several ways: tracing builds the motor memory, read-and-write checks recall without a model in front of the child, the missing letter forces attention to spelling rather than shape, and the find-the-word rows put the target next to its near-twins, which is where sight reading actually gets tested.
Print at 100% (choose "actual size" in the print dialog) on US Letter or A4 paper. Pair these with CVC words worksheets for the words that CAN be sounded out, and with alphabet charts if letter names are still shaky.
