The 3 times table on its own, from the wall chart down to the timed grids. The way in is doubling and putting one group back: 3 x 7 is 14 with a 7 returned to it, so 21. Counting up in threes is easy, and it is not the skill. Asked for 3 x 7 on its own, with nothing printed above it to count from, a child either knows 21 or starts at 3 and climbs. Against the clock, once doubling is too slow

Timed grids from twenty facts in one minute up to ninety-six in eight, some multiplying, some dividing, some alternating between the two. Doubling and putting one group back is an honest route to 3 x 7 and it costs about two seconds, which is a second and a half too many on these pages. Run them only once the shuffled sheets come back clean, and write the time on every one.
