What is a pattern worksheet?

A pattern worksheet asks a child to find the repeating unit in a row and then keep it going. The unit is the short chunk that repeats: AB is two elements, ABC is three, AABB is four. Once a child can say the unit out loud, the answer stops being a guess and becomes a reading.

The pages here move through that idea in order. First come shape patterns where the shape itself changes, then colour patterns where one shape stays put and only the colour moves, then size and rotation patterns, which surprise a lot of children because nothing about the object changes except how big it is or which way it faces. Working the same unit across different attributes is what turns pattern recognition into a general skill instead of a shape trick.

Extending a pattern at the end is only one question. Filling a gap in the middle is harder, because the child has to read the unit from both sides. Extending three more elements at once punishes guessing, since a wrong first answer breaks the next two. Naming the pattern in letters, spotting a deliberate mistake and inventing an original pattern all ask for the same understanding from a different angle, and all of them are on these pages.

Number patterns close the set.
