A number line is a straight line with numbers placed at equal distances along it. That equal spacing is the whole idea: it turns arithmetic into movement, so adding 4 means hopping 4 spaces to the right and subtracting 4 means hopping 4 back. Children who can see a calculation as a trip along the line stop guessing and start reasoning about where numbers live and how far apart they are.
What is on the 90 sheets
The set starts where a five year old starts: writing the missing numbers at empty ticks, first between 0 and 10, later between 100 and 200 and up to 1000. From there it moves through placing dots, naming marked points, and measuring the distance between two dots. The middle of the set is strategy work: reading hops that are already drawn and writing the addition or subtraction they show, splitting a jump at the nearest ten, and subtracting by counting up. The open number lines have no ticks at all, which is exactly the version children use for mental arithmetic in class.
The last rows go where most free sets stop: fractions placed and renamed on the line, decimals in tenths, rounding decided by looking at which ten is nearer, benchmark estimation against 0, 50 and 100, and first steps with negative numbers, including counting across zero.
Which sheet should a child start on?
If counting to 20 is still fresh, start with the missing-number lines to 10 and 20 and the count-on rows. A child who already adds comfortably should go straight to the bridge-through-ten pages: that split is the single most useful habit a number line teaches, and it is the exact strategy behind mental sums like 47 + 8. Fractions, decimals and negatives are for children who already own whole numbers to 100.
Print at 100% (choose "actual size" in the print dialog) on US Letter or A4 paper. The hop skills lean on counting, so the counting worksheets come first if those are shaky.
