Download PDFWhat is a short vowel sound?
A short vowel is the quick, clipped sound each vowel makes in cat, bed, pig, dog and cup. It is the first sound children learn for each letter because it is the one that behaves: it appears in the largest number of simple words and it almost never changes when the word is only three letters long.
Long vowels are the ones that say the letter's own name, as in cake, feet, bike, rope and cube. Children meet these second, usually alongside the silent e that causes them. Keeping the two apart at the start avoids the most common early reading muddle, which is a child trying both sounds at once and guessing.
Why practise vowels on their own?
Because the vowel is where reading breaks down. A child who stalls halfway through a word is nearly always stuck on the middle sound, not the consonants around it. Five minutes hunting vowels inside words does more for blending than another page of letter tracing.
