What is a word family?

A word family is a group of words that share the same ending sound and spelling, called the rime: at gives cat, bat, hat, mat, rat and sat. The first letter changes, everything after it stays put. Learn the pattern once and a dozen words come with it.

That is why families are taught before random word lists. A child who has to decode every word letter by letter reads slowly and forgets the start of the word by the time they reach the end. A child who recognises at reads the whole family almost at a glance, and the effort moves from decoding to understanding.

Which word families should you teach first?

Start with the short a families, at, an and ap, because the vowel is the most consistent and the words are the most concrete. Move through e, then i, then o, then u. Finish one vowel before mixing them: mixing too early is the usual reason a child stalls.

Each family here gets four sheets that work the same pattern four ways. The word list is the reference to pin up. Tracing builds the hand memory of the shape. Read and write checks recall with no model in front of the child. The missing letter blanks the first letter, which is the only part that changes, so the child has to choose the onset rather than copy.

Print at 100% (choose "actual size" in the print dialog) on US Letter or A4 paper. Once families are comfortable, move to CVC words worksheets for mixed words and Dolch sight words for the ones that break the rules.
