A graphing worksheet gives a child a small set of real data and one job to do with it: read a picture graph or bar graph and answer questions, or collect and sort data and draw the graph. The best ones make the child count, compare and calculate, not just color.
The ladder these sheets climb
Data work in elementary school follows a fixed ladder. Kindergartners sort objects and count them. First graders read pictographs and one-step bar graphs where one square means one thing. Second graders meet the scaled key, where one symbol suddenly stands for 2 or 5, and the half symbol appears. Third graders read scales of 5, horizontal bars and frequency tables, and fourth graders answer two-step questions: read two bars, then add, subtract or compare them.
The 53 sheets on this page follow that ladder axis by axis: pictographs from a key of 1 to a key of 5, bar graphs to read and bar graphs to draw, tally and frequency tables, sheets that convert one representation into another, interpretation pages built entirely from questions, and survey templates for collecting the class's own data. Every exercise PDF is two pages: the worksheet, then its answer key worked from the same graph, so checking takes seconds.
How to use them at home or in class
Start where counting is still the job, not reading: the sort and count pages. Move to reading graphs only when counting a row is automatic, and save the scaled keys until multiplication by 2 and 5 is comfortable, because a key of 5 is really a times table in disguise. The survey template is the payoff: children graph data they collected themselves, which is the moment graphs stop being pictures and start being information.
Print at 100% (choose "actual size" in the print dialog) on US Letter or A4. The tally pages lean on the same counting muscles as our counting worksheets, the scaled keys lean on the times tables, and the youngest graphers can warm up with the picture graph items inside our kindergarten math worksheets. Comparing bar heights pairs naturally with comparing numbers, and the survey chain works well alongside the exit tickets in a data unit.
